The Cold Hard Facts

Where are today's lesbian rock stars?

They are in your local music scenes, trying to get that great break, trying to get your attention, be seen and be noticed!  They are in Seattle, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, London and Miami!

The New York band Betty, while not mainstream and by no means have reached superstardom they are becoming more well know thanks to The L Word, it doesn't hurt that L Word creator Ilene Chaiken is dating Betty/Ez Girl's Elizabeth Ziff.  Ziff is now a producer of the L Word, which has sparked a bit of controversy and a bit of criticism from fans online as well.  Betty is hard to take seriously, their B-52's'ish crazy looks and zany'ness may over ride their actual talent.  Do not under estimate this lesbian band, all their music isn't like the horrible theme song from the L Word. Their music may not be as serious as Pink or Swan, but they are talented none the less and they are fun to boot.

In Dallas/Austin, there's one of the best lesbian bars on the planet called Sue Ellen's.  Sue Ellens is well known for bringing in live bands and particularly those that are lesbian heart throbs.  Heather Knox, Ciao Bella, Michele Mayfield and Ginger Leigh.  Heather Knox is a cross between a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll, she is talented.  If you are looking for true great lesbian talent, Austin/Dallas area is a gold mine.  Austin is the most under rated music scenes in the county and has been for years.

There is a myth about San Francisco. And that myth is that it is a Mecca for lesbian bars and nightclubs.  While that may have been true back in the day, it is certainly not true now.  There is only ONE lesbian bar is San Francisco and its small and it's a dive. Dinah Shore promoter Mariah Hanson of G Spot and Cherry Bar days tried like hell to get her lesbian bars off the ground, but failed miserably.  Hanson also became  wrapped up in the DJ techno days.  Luckily San Francisco has really talented known lesbian bands that have great lesbian followings. They are very well known to turn any bar into a lesbian extravaganza!  Vaylence, who mixes heavy electric guitar with an earthty Melissa Etheridge sort of twist,  Heather Combs, and Finding Stella.

Florida's lesbian bar New Moon brings you the tattooed butch babe Bev McClellan and  Linda Nuņez,  Nunez's vocals have a Ann Wilson flair about her, long lasting notes, a harder rhythm guitar, her music is  classic rock at its best, she plays throughout Florida and Georgia.

Los Angeles is the place to be as a lesbian entertainer marketing to powers that be, but not for lesbian live music, your much better off finding many great lesbian performers in Dallas. Hollywood is full of hype and hype'd up wanna be's.  You are more likely to find plastic pop ups, then true talent.  The Viper Room which is a straight venue of sorts, will be your best bet for finding quality entertainment, but they market to a wide variety, I would count on it for bringing you your next lesbian hero.  The typical lesbian venue's, The GirlBar and the Palms are more of the club circuit crowd and as a rule of thumb, will have DJ's primarily spinning techno, however on rare occasion they will bring in a top acts.

Rhode Island, New York, has Kristi Martel who you can catch all over the country!
